چکیده

Ž . The electronic excited-state solvation dynamics of coumarin 314 C314 adsorbed at the airrwater interface was Ž . investigated by femtosecond time-resolved surface second-harmonic generation TRSHG . This Letter presents the first use of TRSHG to measure solvation dynamics and presents the theoretical basis for monitoring electronic excited-state solvation with TRSHG. The interfacial electronic excited solvation time of C314 was measured to be 790"30 fs. This is close to bulk results and is in agreement with simple dielectric continuum models of solvation and the predictions of molecular dynamics simulations. q 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Effect of Solute Orientation on Solvation Dynamics at the Air/Water Interface

The ultrafast solvation dynamics of courmarin 314 (C314) molecules at the air/water interface has been shown to depend on their orientation with respect to the plane of the interface. A pump/second harmonic probe method using femtosecond laser pulses were used to measure the interface solvation dynamics. The pump light was S polarized, i.e., in the interface plane, or P polarized, i.e., in the ...

Femtosecond studies of tryptophan solvation: correlation function and water dynamics at lipid surfaces

We report here a complete study of solvation dynamics of tryptophan in bulk water with femtosecond resolution and present an accurate method for the construction of its solvation correlation function. The water dynamics was observed in one hundred picosecond ( 108 ps) at lipid–water interfaces while in buffer and salt/buffer solutions it becomes faster in tens of picoseconds ( 7–20 ps). These w...

Femtosecond studies of protein-DNA binding and dynamics: histone I.

In this contribution, we report studies of the nature of binding interactions and dynamics of protein histone I (H1) with ligands in solution and as a complex with DNA, an important biological process for the higher-order structure in chromatin. With femtosecond time resolution, we examined the role of solvation by water, the micropolarity at the interface of the binding site(s) of H1, and the ...

Biological water at the protein surface: dynamical solvation probed directly with femtosecond resolution.

Biological water at the interface of proteins is critical to their equilibrium structures and enzyme function and to phenomena such as molecular recognition and protein-protein interactions. To actually probe the dynamics of water structure at the surface, we must examine the protein itself, without disrupting the native structure, and the ultrafast elementary processes of hydration. Here we re...

Electron solvation in finite systems: femtosecond dynamics of iodide. (Water)n anion clusters

Electron solvation dynamics in photoexcited anion clusters of I-(D2O)n=4-6 and I-(H2O)4-6 were probed by using femtosecond photoelectron spectroscopy (FPES). An ultrafast pump pulse excited the anion to the cluster analog of the charge-transfer-to-solvent state seen for I- in aqueous solution. Evolution of this state was monitored by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using an ultrafast p...
